Douglas Fields, who serves as a lead researcher at the National Institutes of Health. According to Fields, current technologies are not capable of controlling human thoughts or behavior in a programmable way.



In his article "Can Machines Control Our Brains?" (Quanta Magazine, 2021), Fields examines the possibilities and limitations of manipulating the brain's electrical activity. While deep brain stimulation, for example, can alleviate neurological symptoms such as those seen in Parkinson’s disease, the technology does not allow for precise control of thoughts or emotions.

Fields emphasizes that the complexity of the brain is a major obstacle to mind control. Each individual's brain is unique, and although stimulation of certain brain areas can trigger predictable reactions—such as feelings of rage or pleasure—these responses vary between individuals. Moreover, current stimulation methods are too imprecise to enable programmable control of thoughts or behavior.

According to Fields, fears of mind control are exaggerated. Although technology is advancing, current methods cannot steer human thoughts or actions remotely or without the person's conscious involvement. However, he notes that as technology evolves, it is important to have ethical discussions and establish regulations to prevent potential misuse.

In summary, Fields states that while the development of brain-computer interfaces offers promising opportunities in medicine, we are still far from a situation where machines could control the human mind. It is crucial to continue research and dialogue on the ethical and societal impacts of technology.
